How to Look After Your Electric Quad in Wet Weather

Wet weather is the biggest worry most electric quad owners have. Mixing water and electrics sounds like trouble, and a wet British winter doesn’t exactly make it easy to keep your quad in good nick.

The good news is that electric quads handle wet weather better than most petrol models. Better traction, more consistent power, fewer parts to seize up. But they still need looking after properly. Here’s how to keep your adult electric quad bike running well through the soggy months.

Before You Ride

Check your seals and covers before heading out. Most modern electric quads have IPX6 or higher water resistance, but only if those seals are intact. Have a quick look at the battery compartment and electrical covers for any cracks or gaps.

Apply dielectric grease to exposed connections, especially the charging port, display, and lighting circuits. It’s a £5 fix that stops corrosion before it starts.

Check your tyre tread and pressure too. Worn tyres on muddy ground will leave you stuck quickly, and the right pressure makes a noticeable difference to grip on slippery surfaces.

Cleaning After a Wet Ride

This is the bit that matters most. Don’t leave mud and water sitting on your quad overnight. That’s how corrosion sets in.

If your model lets you remove the battery, take it out before cleaning. Keep it dry.

Use a low-pressure hose, not a jet wash. Pressure washers can force water past the seals and into places it shouldn’t be. Work top to bottom, paying attention to the undercarriage, suspension, and wheel arches where mud builds up.

For stubborn dirt, use a mild detergent and a soft brush. Stay away from harsh chemicals, they’ll damage protective coatings and rubber seals over time.

Drying Out the Electrics

After cleaning, blow water out of electrical connections with compressed air if you have it. Pay attention to anywhere water might pool.

Check wiring while you’re there. Look for discoloured insulation, loose connections, or any green corrosion on terminals. If something looks off, sort it before your next ride. Damaged wiring on an electric vehicle isn’t something to leave.

If you’re storing the quad for a stretch, drop a few silica gel packs into enclosed electrical compartments. Cheap insurance.

Battery Care During Wet Conditions

Make sure the battery and charging port are completely dry before plugging in. Charging generates heat, and water plus heat is how seals get compromised over time.

Cold and damp also temporarily knock battery performance, so don’t be surprised if your range drops a bit in winter. Store the battery somewhere warm and dry between rides if you can. If your quad lives outside, that’s even more important.

Drivetrain and Suspension Maintenance

Wet mud is basically grinding paste. It eats through grease and accelerates wear on anything moving.
Check drive belts more often. Look for stretching, cracking, or contamination.

Re-grease bearings and pivot points weekly during heavy use. Marine-grade grease holds up best because it resists being washed out.

Wipe shock absorber seals carefully. Grit on those seals scores the internals and shortens their life fast.

Storage Through the Wet Months

Store the quad somewhere dry. Sounds obvious, but a damp shed with no airflow is almost as bad as leaving it outside. A dehumidifier or even just a fan helps.

Don’t park it in a puddle. Get it up on something if your floor floods.

Cover it with a breathable cover, not a plastic tarp. Tarps trap humidity and you end up creating exactly the problem you’re trying to avoid.

A coat of protective wax on painted surfaces and exposed metal goes a long way. Wet riding strips that protection quickly, so reapply through the season.
